Having written some articles on party games for kids, I was asked to explain my formula for a successful kids party. So here it is… in this 4-part series you will find out my 4 essential rules for planning a successful kids party, why a party plan works, the 7 steps of a good party plan and how to use a party plan to ensure a successful kids party.

The key to my formula for a successful kids party is concentrated around 4 essential rules.

1.      Keep it simple. By this I mean simple food and simple games. Simple really can be best.  Keep the party simple and you will have time to enjoy preparing and participating in the party. Keep the party simple and it will also cost you less.

2.      Make a party plan. In other words be prepared. You need to plan ahead, know what you need to do and do as much as is possible before the day of the party. You will create great memories for yourself and your kids because you will have time to enjoy the party with them.

3.      Party Games. Use party games as your party entertainment. Your party will be full of fun and laughter. The kids will love you for planning party games as the entertainment and they are inexpensive too. In my book of party games for kids the games fall into one of four categories, food games, races and relays, musical games and memory games. Four to six games will be enough.

4.      Designated areas. I have found that having a designated area is essential. All the party equipment and supplies are given a designated area where they can be stored and found with ease. This makes it easy leading up to the party and especially the day before and day of the party. This may seem like an unnecessary thing to spend time on, however, it will save plenty of wasted time and stress trying to locate items you know you bought and have forgotten where you put them.

  • One area in both the fridge and freezer where you can easily locate all the frozen and cold items.
  • Cupboard space, table or the corner of a room for all the non – perishable items.

Do you have an idea for a great party, but don’t know how to make it happen. Don’t fret, for you have come to the right place. Party planning is my game and information is forthcoming.

Party planning can be difficult if you don’t know how to begin. You may find yourself running around at the last minute for party supplies or maybe you forgot to send out the invitations. If this was to occur it would be definitely be the loneliest party I have ever heard of. In order to keep your party planning on track you will need to follow these steps.

1) Decide what type of party you want to have. If you haven’t already made a decision, make one now. Do you want a theme party. A few different types are: pool, barbeque, luau, construction, Halloween, Hollywood, Casino and Arabian Nights. Those are your most popular themes, just to name a few. There are many other types of parties. If you know what type of party you plan on throwing it will make it that much easier to prepare for.

2) Create a checklist. This should be second on the order of business. This is where you will outline the various phases of your planning. Once you have a piece of paper with the word ‘Checklist’ written on it you are ready for the next phase.

3) A guest list: This is an important part of your party planning. In order to move on to the other steps you must have a very good idea as to the amount of guests, the ages of the guests and the eating and drinking habits of the guests. For instance, if one of your invitees are vegetarian you will want to have something prepared especially for them. Don’t take anything for granted. After all, you are looking to have an absolute smash that everyone will enjoy.

4) Once you have your guest list prepared and written out on your checklist you will need to either send out invitations or do things the old fashioned way by using the phone. However, it is much classier and personalized if you send out invitations. You can either have them prepared by a professional or craft them yourself.

5) After a week or so goes by you should have a very good idea who is coming. Now is the time to go out and get your party supplies. There are ways of doing this that is tantamount to an exact science. It won’t be outlined here, but with the information you have about the number, age and eating and drinking habits of your guests you should be able to come up with the right amount of food and drink for everyone. Don’t cut yourself short. Buy plenty of snacks, and whatever else you may need. If you hired an outside caterer be sure to go over the guest list with them. They will want to know the amount of guests, but don’t forget to add any details they must know about, like ‘your Great Aunt is diabetic’ or something to that effect.

7) Food and beverages: The food is probably the greatest treasure you can have at any party, with the exception of alcohol, so make sure the preparations are done ahead of time. Have everything you need to avoid any last minute shopping, that way you can create your master piece without any untimely setbacks.

6) Decorating: Are you having the party inside or outside. If it is going to be indoors, be sure to have ample seating for everyone who agreed to come, plus a few extra chairs. Don’t leave someone standing because you didn’t expect them to come. Unless they told you specifically they weren’t going to make it, expect them. A good idea for decorating is to always use flowers. You can spice up your dining room, living room or any room in the house with a beautiful flowery ensemble set nicely in a watery vase.

The next phase of your party planning will be to have everything cleaned and ready. You are about to have a party and you want to have everything looking perfect. So do your cooking, then your cleaning and get yourself cleaned and shined. The guests are on their way and they are expecting to have a great time. It is up to you to make that happen. A good tip for any host is: a happy host makes a great host and a great host throws unbelievable parties. Have an awesome time.

Parents want their kids to have a successful party event. Planning a party itinerary in advance is key to assuring that kids are kept entertained and amused during the event. Give yourself at least a month to assure everything runs smoothly on party day.

Start planning early and select the party date and time while avoiding any holidays or school vacations. Kids parties usually are about 2 hours long.

Next you and the party honoree should make a guest list so you can determine how many kids will attend. One rule of thumb for birthday parties is – 1 guest per year old - up to 10 years old. In other words, have 5 kids for a 5th birthday party. Some people like to invite the whole class, to avoid any feelings being hurt. You would probably only do this if you were having the party at a rented facility. Make sure there are enough adults on hand to supervise. The younger the kids - the higher the ratio.

To be really organized, include each party goers phone contact, RSVP check mark once they confirm they are attending and finally a gift column where you can enter what type of gift you received. You can then thank them individually with a thank you card or note after the party. A nice idea is to take a photo of the birthday child with each guest, to include with the thank you note later.

Theme parties create a fun atmosphere so the party host can decide which theme best reflects the mood of the event. Party themes can be created around characters from television, movies, magazine or books. You can also create a party theme related to seasonal holidays or travel destinations. I will explore exciting new party themes in an upcoming article.

Popular birthday party themes include a Magic Party, High School Musical Party, Star Wars Party, Hannah Montana Party, Pirate Birthday Party or Disney Princess Party. Younger kids always enjoy a Barney or Dora the Explorer theme.  Party games, especially ones with little prizes, can make the party extra fun.  Try to make sure everyone wins a little something – so every child goes home feeling happy.

Your event may also call for an entertainer so be sure to book them early to avoid disappointment.

When the event is concluded, your child can hand out the party favours or “loot bags” and thank each guest for coming. These party favours do not need to be elaborate, but just reflect the theme of the day. They can even be handcrafted items made during the party. Dollar stores are great sources for loot bag items. Check for colorful tote or mesh bags to put the loot in. For older children, one nice item – a t-shirt, sports ball or $5 gift card, may be better appreciated.

Kids’ Parties are a lot of fun and allow your child to celebrate with friends and family creating a lasting memory. Your advanced preparation and planning will go along way to assuring a successful event and a happy child. Be sure to take plenty of photographs – before you know it they will be planning parties for their own kids!
